Child Prodigies.

I saw this video on youtube, a 7 year old boy playing Fantasy Impromptu, a song that I`m unable to complete before I came to MMU.

The vidoe itself, was amazing. I mean, a 7 years old boy playing Chopin`s fantasy impromptu.. kidding mate!! his leg barely touch the pedal... lol. But, what I found out later, amaze me more.

I never read much on child prodigies. I wonder why people like him doesn`t get much publicity. Here`s his website. http://www.geocities.com/kitcarmstrong/1000.html

I`ll post up his part of his biography here

Kit Armstrong is a fifteen-year-old pianist and composer who also displays remarkable gifts for mathematics, science, and languages. At the age of five, he began formal composition and piano studies. At seven, he became the youngest scholarship student in the history of Chapman University in California, attending the university part-time while completing high school. Two years later, he became a full-time undergraduate student, studying music and science. He now attends the Royal Academy of Music and the Imperial College in London, England.

Whilst attending college, Kit has given a number of performances; among the most notable are the Steinway and Sons’ Anniversary concert at Carnegie Hall, and the Classical Music Luncheon of the 44th Annual Grammy Awards honoring Van Cliburn. He has appeared as soloist with numerous orchestras, having made his concerto debut at the age of eight. In 2005, he performed Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 1, conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras. Forthcoming engagements include a performance with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and return appearances with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.

Kit’s piano repertoire encompasses a wide range of composers including all 24 Preludes and Fugues from the Well-Tempered Clavier Book I by Bach, all 18 Mozart Piano Sonatas, 12 Beethoven Piano Sonatas, as well as works by Haydn, Schubert, Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, Brahms, Debussy, and Ravel. His concerto repertoire includes works by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Chopin, Schumann, and Bartok.

As a composer, Kit has written in various styles. His compositions include numerous pieces for solo piano, a viola sonata, three string quartets, a piano quartet, two piano quintets, wind quintet, a piano concerto, and a symphony. This symphony, “Celebration”, composed at the age of seven, was premiered by the Pacific Symphony Orchestra. In addition to winning a number of state competitions, he has been awarded the Morton Gould Young Composer Award for four consecutive years.

These people really made you feel like shite. He can do more things at age 7 than me, who`s now approaching 20. and I still yet to learn how to play Fantasy Impromptu. GAH!!!!

Don`t you ever wonder

Why the sun lightens our hair, but darkens our skin?

Why women can't put on mascara with their mouth closed?

Why you ever see the headline "Psychic Wins Lottery"?

And...

Why is it that to stop Windows, you have to click on "Start"?

Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavor, and dishwashing liquid made with real lemons?

Why is the man who invests all your money called a broker?

Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour?

Embarrassing

I did a lot of thing the last 3 days that makes me never want to show my face in public again. Like :

1) How I lost to my 'junior' in a chess tournament on Saturday.

2) How I manage to achieve my record in achery tournament.... the record of my lowest score in a 30 meter shot. (23 points in 6 arrows)

3) How I thought I prepared myself for exam, even thought a bunch of group mates how to the tutorials and questions... and at the exam, I walk off the hall 20 minutes early, and realized I did a HUGE mistake 5 minutes later. (I think I put a '-' on the wrong alphabeth)

4) And the most embarrasing one... some one actually pass the link of that stupid video around and a lot people in my campus saw that video. Now random ppl came and said.. Hey I saw you on YouTube...

Canon Rock

Those who knows me probably knows that I like the song canon very much. A little too much actually.

I played that on piano more than thousands of time (literally) in different variations. Then it occurs to me, wouldn`t it be cool if it can be played with a guitar.

Then Jerry C came up with his arrangement of canon rock 5 years ago.He instantly became famous with that video.....

Since I had an electric guitar at home.. I thought, why not.

Disclaimer : This video is not genuine. It just did it because I thought it`s cool. That`s what guitar is about anyway, isn`t it :P

Just for fun la.. since I don`t have photos to share.... do something dumb once a while is fun.

Random--ness

I heard about this thing call the human biological clock. It explains cases where if you sleep 12am -8am everyday, any thing out of routine will make you body haywire. I didn`t know it works the same for emotions.

I`m feeling really random. Neither, happy, nor sad. Actually, I don`t feel like feeling anything. Just waiting to time to pass by. I`ll attribute this to the sudden changes my Thermodynamics mid term. It was initially schedule on last Monday. I was complaining because of the busy weekend and another exam on Tuesday. In fact, many of the Mechanical Engineering students didn`t sleep much just to prepare for this exam. (it`s the toughest subject this sem).

Then, few hours before the exam, we found out that the exam was postpone because some brilliant lecturer didn`t book the venue. The notice was like this :

Mid Term Test Postponement :
Dear Students,
Due to some miscommunications, there is no venue for tonite's mid term test. As such, the mid term test would be postponed. ( Most probably, next Monday) I apologise for any inconviniences caused.
Thank you.

Isnt next Monday E-tech midterm? Condusion and tension arises. Though at this point, everyone seem to be relieve and angry at the same time. Relief that the exam is not today, angry that we studied for this while we have another exam tomorrow.. and we still have to go through thermo in a date we`re unsure of.

A few hours later... another notice ( she seem to think that we check the bulletin every minute of our life.)

Mid Term Test Date_ To be announced :
Dear students,
Mid term test can't be held next Monday ( 26.06.07) due to the clash with Electrical Technology II examination. As there are a few tests for ME subjects next week ( Numerical Analysis, Measurement and Insturmentation) , I have to arrange the exam on this week , most probably Wednesday or Thursday. I will announce tomorrow. I am sure you have build up the momentum preparing for the exam, so keep up the hard work. All the best to you in the mid term test.
Now, it could be on Wednesday or Thursday... shite... but don`t we have replacement classes on Wednesday night? (I hope I give you an idea how many hours of classes we have to attend). So, on Tuesday, during the Workshop Technology midterm... an announcement :
Mid Term Test is on 21-03-2007 ( WEDNESDAY) :
Dear students,
The mid term test is finalised on 21.03.2007 ( Wednesday), 8-9.15 pm at Studio A and Studio B. Please check for your venue in the attached file. PLEASE DO REMEMBER TO BRING ALONG THE THERMODYNAMICS PROPERTIES TABLE (attached in my previous announcement). Sorry for hiccups and all the best in the test. Thank you.

An exam announcement during the exam. How great. Even more stressful, it`s tomorrow. Everyone panic and start to do their last minute revision.... and even more confusion.. what about our replacement classes?

About your replacement class for Strength of Mater :
Dear students,
I have discussed with Mr. Wong Kim Jye, he has agreed to move the replacement class on Wednesday night to the thermodynamics lecture slot from 3-5pm this Thursday (22.03.2007). Thus, the Thermodynamics lecture on this Thursday is taken up by Mr. Wong. Thank you.

Ooooo.. now we know... so everyone reaarange their plannings and prepare for tomororw exam.

and a few hours later (.what!! again?)

LATEST DATE FOR YOUR MID TERM TEST :
Dear students,
After getting some feedbacks from you and taking into consideration about your performance in the mid term test, I have decided to settle for a new date. Please note that the date is final and I hope that you are going to prepare well for the test.
Date: 7-04-2007 ( Saturday)
Time: 10- 11.15 am
Venue : To be announced
Thank you.

Why study in MMU?

Claire had a long post on how beautiful Michigan is, with all the superb architecture and landscape. MMU of course, had none of them to brag about. I`ve acknowledge and accepted that long ago. Yet, despite how old and shabby it is, MMU remain beautiful, reflected by what actually made up a university... which is the people.

For some reason, everyone here seems to know one another, even without prior interaction. Maybe because the campus is so small, that we bump into each other, intentionally/unintentionally....

But yea, this happens. And it`s so easy to spark a conversation, or do anything at all. There are people around all the time, either mending the booth, giving fliers, rushing to classes, playing games, doing nothing.. and you can simply talk to anyone of them as if you knew them for years.

On Wednesday, after I finished one of my midterm, I saw someone playing basketball. Then I joined... and more people joined.. and we ended up playing till 1am. Who we played with, we stil had no idea. Who the basketball belongs to, no idea either. The best part, none of us are actually there to play basketball. We just happen to be there; for different reasons. One group was practicing Silat, one group was doing their drama practice, one group with the Indian cultural dance, the other, a performance dance for tomorrow`s event, GACC (Games Anime and Comic Convention). Pss... all this happen during the night, students here are very active.

We sat there, laugh at how ridiculous when that guy trying to dance para para, how silat member practice so hard, but ran away when the basketball rolled near them. We imitated the dance after watching them practice for 10 times. We laugh, we talk, we make fun of everything.... and we had no idea why we were doing this together. I probably still don`t know half of the names of the people I met that day. :p

When everyone left, I sat there pondering.... and it was at the very moment, I had never been surer, that I`ve chosen the right university.

The worst week

I always blog about having to go the most horrible week in the semester. Actually, what qualifies the week for earning such a title. Let`s see. It must :

1) had at least an exam
2) at least 2 assignment to pass up.
3) replacement classes
4) co curricular activities
5) not enough of sleep

So, I just got back from Singapore, having not 1, not 2, but 4 assignments waiting in line which NONE was even close to completing. In fact, I had only seen the cover page for most of the assignment. I missed some of the dead line and I`m about to go to the lecturer`s office to ask for some grace period to copy, erm I mean, finishing my assignment.

Teams to South Korea is finalized, finally. Though, administration had yet to approved all the paper work involved. I`m so not going to let them screw us over and we ended up not going, like last year, not when I`m team manager this time. I`ll lick Zamzuri's ball if I had to. (a figure of speech... ew!!)

Mid term test on Wednesday, and 2 more test next Monday and Tuesday. GACC ( Games, Anime and Comic's Convention) this weekend clashes with a inter school chess tournament at St David. I was asked to be an arbiter and I could hardly say no. Not if I`m trying to establish a reputation for chess club in Malacca. So I`ll only be on duty for GACC on the second day. (did I mention exams on Monday and Tuesday?).

Bah, I`ll take it one at a time I suppose. What`s important now is to settle the paper work, get the tickets to Seoul, request for a supplementary exam for the finals, beg lecturers to give me all their tutorial solution, and lick...... forget it.

Updates from Lion City

Things went horribly wrong right from the start.

I left my house bearly 5 minutes and I realised I forget to bring my Singapore dollars. I ended up changing 46 ringgit into 20 dollar, which of course, will get you nowhere in this place. Nevermind that.

I got rather annoyed with certain people jumping at every suggestion I made. I ended up leaving the table halfway and walk back to the hostel myself. More horror awaits there. The room`s aircond is dead. (p.s : those room does not have ceiling fans either). With that day 1 ended.

Day 2 started with only 3 hours of sleep. We stayed in one end of Singapore (Changi Area) and NTU is on the other end. Travel travel travel, we reach there... early. The one word we use to describe early debators = noobs!!!! Who the hell reaches early than the registered time. So we`re all sleepy, tired and grumpy. The 2 rounds doesn`t turn out that well either, at least not in my favour.

We got opposition for both rounds, and we screwed over by the goverment's set up. Motion 1 : This house will support civil uprising against oppresive regime. Fair enough. It can be Thailand, Myammar, Iraq, Sri Langka... so many perfect case study. And NO, they set it up in a Hamas-Fatah situation, saying we should support Fatah to take overthrow Hamas so we can guarantee Israel security. WTF!!!

Second debate was the same. Motion : THW give Radical clerics a platform. The gov created a lie, saying 2 iman`s were caught in Britain because they talk about poligamy, and build entire case upon that. Shrugs.... it was never an issue to begin with. You can voices out all you want in UK as long you don`t go saying Jihad is good. And that`s exactly what we`re saying, those who say Jihad is good should go to jail.

2 rounds, 2 losses...... with everything turns out to be a horrible twist of event, this really sucks.

Singapore tomorrow.

Yeap, will be traveling again. For the same reason.

It`s a little hard to squeeze this tourney into my schedule. I had to sacrifice one of my thermodynamics classes, one lab report and my assignment. Not to mention I have another midterm test next week. (I've already screwed up the last one).

I guess I`ll just try and enjoy this weekend. Screw all those reports :P

Earthquake, again?

To be very frank, I won`t pretend that I`m deeply sadden this time. Though, that doesn`t change the fact that people still died, and hundreds injured.

The only effect we have here, is slight tremors. I don`t feel it at all, the whole of my campus were force to evacuate. Class were canceled for 24 hours. (I`ll need to replace 6 hours of them..dammit).

But what happens next? Especially those affect in Indonesia. More funds to be channeled in? More help... I wonder when the world will start saying,"sorry, our funds had run dry, there are no one willing to help anymore" because disaster`s are happening faster then the humanatarian aid can support.

True enough, the frequency of earthquake, hurricanes and floods are increasing. A lot. Read the symptoms... everyone already knows why. Only thing is, when will someone starts to do something about it.

*for those who still don`t know what I`m talking about, I`m refering to global warming.

Ambition

For the longest time, I`m not sure what this word means. Even until now. I remembered I wanted to be an architech when I was 6 years old, then change to an engineer when the only thing I knew how to draw is stick figures. (my art totaly suck, even after an attempt to go for art class).

So here I am, taking up Mechanical Engineering. A lot of my friends`s parents, and even my very own parents, thinks highly of me, being able to choose what I want to do from the very start. Of cuz, what they didn`t know is that I decide them with coin tosses.

I remembered taking countless career test, and I ticked all those that matters to me. The result was everything, from artist-doctor. Then I pick all engineering related, and of cuz, it says I should become an engineer. (I`m so suprised!! <--- sarcasticly).

The sense of guilt hit me during the interview for scholarship, when someone asked, why do you want to take Mechanical. I can`t really say I fliped a coin, can I? So I bullshited a lot of stuff, and naturally, they`re impressed.

In fact, I can take any course, do any field (except for arts/designing) and I can self justify why that course is best for me. While I can convince the world, I can`t convince myself. Again, what do I want really? save the world? make it a better place? even rappers say they do.

Can I really contribute to the society? or just another person on earth, wasting it`s precious resources.

A picture says a thousand word.

And pictures I will have none. I sent my hp for repair. Most of the pictures in my blog are taken by that handphone. That also explains why most of the picture's quality are horrible.

But a blog without pictures are worst. I guess I just have to wait till it`s done.

Anyway, I`m going to Cyberjaya tomorrow to meet up with the chess club there. Time to forge close ties between sister campus. Actually, I just want them to come for my tournament in April. After I meet them, they will have no excuse to say no to us.. Mwahahahaha :P

Well, I`ll be back home tomorrrow (Kajang). Though, for reasons I don`t know of. In fact, all I`ll be doing is go home for dinner and leave the next day. Hardly worth it. But, I can`t tell my parents that I`m not going home when I`ve already made it all the way to Cyberjaya.

So guys, call me out on Saturday night okie :) <- those who stay in Kajang la......

This space is my simple escape from the harsh reality. Expect lots of random rants and whining apart from the daily reporting of things going I`m going through.

Take nothing seriously, leave comments, or just a simple hi. The world is getting smaller by the day, why not know each other now. Have fun ya all.

Regards,
Alex
